Energy Savings with Proper Energy Management
Archbishop Hannan High School's HVAC system was simultaneously heating and cooling spaces, which resulted in the school’s utility bills to run more than three times the average benchmark. All of the major equipment was scheduled to come on at the same time, which resulted in high peak-demand energy rates.
The Challenge
A highly-sophisticated Building Automation System (BAS) was not properly maintained and it’s sensors were not routinely calibrated. This caused the school‘s HVAC system to simultaneously heat and cool spaces, which resulted in the school’s utility bills to run more than three times the average benchmark. All of the major equipment was scheduled to come on at the same time, which resulted in high peak demand energy rates.
The Solution
Star Service performed a “re-commissioning” of Archbishop Hannan High School’s BAS system. We inspected, calibrated and replaced sensors to ensure their proper operation. We also implemented new Energy Management subroutines, which would not allow the system to simultaneously heat and cool. The time-of-day schedule was optimized to correct the peak demand problems.
The Results
In the first year of implementing of our Energy Managment Services, the Archbishop Hannan High School saved more than $81,000 and reduced their energy consumption by 28%, as compared to the previous year’s utility bills. The savings are being reallocated for other facility upgrades and a new advanced curriculum.
